Casualty, is a British medical drama that airs on BBC One. Having been on the air for over 30 years, it is the longest-running prime time medical drama in the world. It was created by Jeremy Brock and Paul Unwin and was first broadcast on 6 September 1986. The programme is set in the fictional city of Holby and focuses on the staff and patients at Holby City Hospital’s emergency department.
James plays Archie Grayling is a surgical consultant who works at Holby General Hospital. He is the father of junior doctor Sebastian Grayling.
In November 2016, he visited the ED and clashed with Dylan Keogh over the treatment of a teenage boy who was refusing to have an operation. It soon became clear to Dylan that Seb was getting distracted from his work due to his father being there. Archie later tried to get Seb to swap mentors, but Seb refused to give up working with Dylan. Also during the day, Alicia Munroe asked Archie if he’d like to go on a date with Lily Chao, to which he accepted. At the end of their shift they met and went out together.
Two weeks later, Archie once again visited the department to examine a young boy following a lorry accident. He also chatted with Lily and they agreed to meet up for a coffee. At the end of the shift just as Archie was going back upstairs, he oversaw an argument between the doctors and nurses in reception about each others’ competency. At this point, Archie revealed himself as the undercover inspector in the department and informed Elle that she’d have his report by the end of the week. In December, Archie attended the staff Christmas party with Lily. Midway through, she agreed to go back to his house and spend the night together. He later played down their relationship dismissing Lilys feelings and ending their short lived relationship.
