In 1783, Ross Vennor Poldark came home from the American War of Independence. He found Cornwall changed in the time he spent away – he finds his father dead, his estate in ruins, and his old sweetheart ,Elizabeth Chynoweth. engaged to his first cousin Francis. He saves a young woman, Demelza Carne, from a brawl and takes her on as a kitchen maid. He helps the people of Nampara and attempts to gain control of family mines sought after by his schoolboy rival and adversary, the arrogant and ever-suspicious George Warleggan.
James plays Lord Falmouth is a prominent political figure in Cornwall who uses patronage and his influence in Parliament. In the series, Lord Falmouth has a nephew named Hugh who Poldark saves from imprisonment with the French. Lord Falmouth gives Poldark his political backing, believing that Poldark gave Hugh extra time with him.
